BISMARCK, ND - The North Dakota Industrial Commission today approved more than $2.9 million in grants during the latest grant round for the Commission’s Lignite Research, Development and Marketing Program. The funding for this program is generated from lignite severance tax as well as oil and gas production tax revenue. The program supports the growth of North Dakota’s lignite industry through research and education.

“The projects approved today demonstrate the Commission’s continued commitment to position North Dakota as the nation’s leader in energy research and innovation,” said members of the Commission in a joint statement. The Commission, comprised of Gov. Kelly Armstrong, Attorney General Drew Wrigley and Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring, oversees the administration of the grant program.

Upon the recommendation of the Lignite Research Council, the Commission approved the following projects:

  • $1,462,500 to the Energy and Environmental Research Center for the “Development of Next-Generation Carbon Capture Technologies for Efficiency Improvement and Cost Reduction” project.
  • $1,499,653 to AmeriCarbon Products LLC for the “Commercial Plant Design Optimization: Lignite To Critical Carbon Materials” project.
