Renewable Energy Program

BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota Industrial Commission has approved $805,000 in Renewable Energy Program grants for two projects.

Energy and Environmental Research Center (EERC) received $500,000 to further investigate the potential for integrated carbon capture and storage at the Red Trail Energy ethanol facility. This is the third phase of a five phase project. Work in this phase includes permitting, outreach, monitoring, and characterization.

eSmart Systems US, Inc. received $305,000 for a demonstration project of a “Smart Clean Energy Package” that will utilize solar energy and artificial intelligence for electric vehicle charging and lighting at the Roberts Commons while making efficient use of the grid. As part of the project, a guide will be created for developers and cities on how to cost-effectively incorporate a similar package in new construction or remodeling projects.

In a joint statement the Commission stated, “Both projects innovatively examine new ways of adding value to existing infrastructure and building the renewable energy industry in North Dakota.”

The North Dakota Industrial Commission, consisting of Gov. Doug Burgum as chairman, Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem and Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring, oversees the Renewable Energy Program. Gov. Burgum abstained from the vote on the eSmart Systems US, Inc. project. Agriculture Commissioner Goehring abstained from the vote on the Energy and Environmental Research Center/Red Trail Energy project.

The Legislature established the program in 2007 to provide funding for research, development, marketing and education to foster growth of renewable energy including wind, biofuels, biomass, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and hydrogen.

The next application deadline for the program is February 1, 2019.
