BISMARCK, ND – The North Dakota Industrial Commission (Commission) has approved a $437,000 Renewable Energy Program grant to the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) in Grand Forks to research low-pressure electrolytic ammonia (LPEA) production.
The total cost of the project is $3,164,010 with $2,497,983 coming from the US Department of Energy. The purpose of this project is to develop economically viable ammonia production from electricity at smaller plants across North Dakota. It will also offer a cost-effective means of storing renewable energy as ammonia.
In a joint statement the Commission stated, “It is exciting to see this collaborative effort between the EERC, NDSU and UND to develop a technology that, if successful, could lead to manufacturing jobs across the state as well as local and regional ammonia production for North Dakota farmers using North Dakota resources.”
The Legislature established the renewable energy grant program in 2007 to provide funding for research, development, marketing and education to foster growth of renewable energy including wind, biofuels, biomass, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal and hydrogen.
The next application deadline for the program is Aug. 1, 2018.
